Celebrating Christmas in Melbourne, 2017

Tuesday, 5 December 2017

Is anyone else struggling to come to terms with the fact that it's already December?! Where has this gone?? I'm pretty sure it was just February and we were planning for our wedding and then all of a sudden there are carols in the shopping centre, you can't find a place to park your car anywhere and it's December the 5th, with 20 days until Christmas and 26 days until the new year.

I love Christmas! It is by far my favourite time of the year. The celebrations, the Christmas trees,  buying and wrapping presents for our loved ones. The Christmas spirit spreads through the whole month with carols on the radio and decorations lining the suburban streets. Melbourne really comes to life at Christmas time, with events happening across the whole city. Here's a quick guide to all the different ways things you can do in Melbourne this month to get into that Christmas spirit.

Take a selfie with the Giant Christmas Bauble
The giant Christmas bauble in Federation Square was a huge hit last year with both photographers and selfie-lovers, and it's back for another season of fairy-lit goodness Illuminating the court opposite St. Paul's Cathedral, the six metre high bauble will sparkle during the day and twinkle at night. Take a photo at Santa's House
You can find Santa underneath the giant Christmas tree in Federation Square. Take a free photo with Santa and let him know what you'd like to find under the Christmas tree this year. Image found here.
Federation Square, 10am - 12pm & 1pm - 3pm, plus 4pm - 7pm on Fridays

Watch the Festive Projections
See the city come to life as bright colours and images are projected onto some of Melbourne's most famous buildings. The projections will tell two stories across the many sites, taking you on a journey through Santa's workshop and everything that happens in preparation for Christmas. Image found here.
Federation Square and the State Library of Victoria, 9pm to 10:20pm (show every 20 minutes) until Christmas Day | You can also find festive projections this year at New Quay Promenade in the Docklands between 9pm and 10:30pm.

Check out the Gingerbread Village
Spot your favourite Melbourne landmarks  in a complete gingerbread village. The chefs have been a little bit naughty with different parts of the village, so make sure you keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary! Image found here.
Melbourne Town Hall, 9am to 8:15pm daily until December 24th | Gold coin donation required.

Have a very tacky Christmas
Lonsdale Street Greek Precinct is channeling its inner cheesiness for Christmas this year! Head to Lonsdale and Russell Streets for tacky decorations in shop fronts, inflatable decorations and even a tacky Santa Clause singing unconventional carols.
